Major (legal) changes in 2024!

A new year, new opportunities, but this year also brings a number of new changes in the law. Most of them probably won’t affect you, but the new laws that do are listed below. Will it become a lot easier?

Pension accrual starts at age 18

In 2023 you only started to accrue pension from age 21. That has changed to three years earlier. Will you notice this in your wallet? No! For the younger people entering the job market now, it is actually only positive, since they will start building pension three years earlier.

Since 1 July 2023 the eight-week waiting period has been abolished. Previously you only started building pension when you had worked somewhere for eight weeks. Since 1 July 2023, you start from day 1.

Tax-free travel costs raised

From 1 January, the tax-free travel allowance has been increased to 0.23 euros per kilometer. In 2023 it was still 0.21 euros. If you earn more than 0.23 euros per kilometer, that extra is treated as salary and is thus subject to payroll taxes.

Introduction of a minimum wage from 1 January 2024

There is also a change to the minimum wage and the minimum holiday allowance. The minimum wage for employees aged 21 and older is fixed as of 1 January 2024. Employees younger than 21 have a fixed minimum hourly wage from 1 January. The minimum wage is based on a 36-hour workweek.
